What Is The Best Headshot Lighting? | Clarksburg, Maryland Headshot Photography.
Lighting is one of the most important details in achieving a professional headshot that conveys confidence, approachability, and professionalism.
The right lighting can minimize imperfections in your skin, enhance the structure and features in your face, and create a professional look for business professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs. On the other hand, poor lighting can create unflattering shadows and diminish the impact of your headshot.
Studio Lighting for Headshots
Studio lighting is my favorite when creating professional headshots and portraits. I often use strobes and constant lights in my studio. With these, I can choose which modifier I want to use and how I want to use it. I don’t need to worry about having harsh sun or trying to find a shady place to shoot, I have full control over the lighting.
Studio lighting is ideal for business headshots, executive headshots and any time you need a polished and consistent look across all your photos.
Natural Light, outdoor Headshots
Using natural light can be beautiful. But, relying on the sun as your main and only source of light can be a bit tricky. Time of day is key for really soft, beautiful light, usually around golden hour, 5 to 6 pm. But then you only have about an hour and need to find a place where that light is diffused. Even when shooting outdoor headshots, I still tend to bring a light to mitigate the unforgiving sun!
Male business headshot lighting
While I tend to have a different lighting setup for men and women, I can use either for both. Men’s lighting tends to have more shadows, show more contour, and show the definition in the face. I use a key light, which is set up either on the left or the right, and a softer fill light on the opposite side to soften the line between shadow and highlight a bit. Mostly, I want light in both eyes, unless of course we’re going for a really edgy, moody look.
Woman’s Lighting For Headshots
For female business headshots, I tend to prefer lighting that wraps around the face evenly. This reduces shadows and contouring and helps to make the skin appear softer. It’s perfect for those who are a little older and have some wrinkles or lines in the skin that they want softened. This is a really beautiful and soft light but is still engaging and professional.
Executive Headshots
For team or executive headshots, having a consitent look across the board is key. You don’t want to have differnet ligting and different styles in everyones photo. Keeping it even, beautifull and consisten is best for your marketing needs. I will generally shoot a more flattering womens lighitng set up for these events unless I’ve discussed an alternative first. Often I need to match what is already being used on the site, I can be flexible with my lighting set up and am happy to match a look that is already being used.
